How to solve the problem of rising damp: techniques and materials

Our solution

Rising damp is also known as “damp rising from the ground” and is an extremely widespread phenomenon in homes and rooms on the ground floor, basement or even basement. Taverns and cellars are affected by this humidity whether they are in the city, at the seaside or in the mountains.
Let’s now see in detail how to distinguish rising damp and how to resolve this problem.

How to distinguish rising damp

The most widespread building materials such as concrete, brick and stone are characterized by the characteristic of “porosity” thanks to which they are more subject to the problem of rising damp. In fact, humidity rises inside them based on the physical phenomenon of “capillarity” according to which the smaller the diameter of the capillaries, the higher the level of humidity reaches in the walls. It can even reach one meter. As is easy to imagine, this phenomenon can increase in the coldest and rainiest months, also due to the lack of evaporation of humidity.
How do we distinguish rising damp? First of all, it is important to know that there are some distinctive features that differentiate rising damp from other forms of damp such as surface condensation. When there is rising damp, uniform stains appear that rise up the wall from the floor upwards, patches with defined edges and stains that persist even when the climatic conditions and relative humidity vary.

How to solve this problem

It is true, it is not easy to solve the problem of rising damp in a simple way but it is still possible to do so by adopting some particular techniques. In the case of condominiums or historic buildings, what we recommend is the creation of ventilated attics on the ground floor so as to remain dry and a large amount of humidity will be permanently eliminated. Another method consists in the use of a dehumidifying plaster which, compared to the traditional one, lowers humidity levels and helps the walls to remain healthy and dry.
Finally, without damaging the brickwork or structure of your home, we also recommend using a good dehumidifier which traps steam and reduces humidity significantly.
