Moisture in the walls of your home is a big problem. It is not just an aesthetic issue – objectively, damp stains are terribly unsightly – but above all it is a health issue . When humidity nestles in the walls, it brings with it water-soluble salts that it absorbs from the ground and which are also present in building materials. There are different types of humidity, but the outcome is always the same: ugly stains on the walls which then end up causing the plaster to fall. 

• Rising damp , or capillary damp, is typical of the walls of those rooms which are located on the ground floor. This phenomenon is due to the rising water along the micro-cracks of the traditional plasters. 

• Positive pressure humidity is that present inside swimming pools and which corrodes their walls.

• Negative pressure humidity is found mainly inside cellars and in semi-basements.

What are the solutions for damp internal walls that work? Well, there are several, from thermoplasters to breathable finishing panels and anti-mold paints.

A breathable plaster, for example, can prove to be the ideal solution.

Techniques for remediating humidity on walls

There are therefore different techniques to remediate humidity in walls. One of the most common, for example, is the injection of water-repellent materials based on silicone , or similar, inside the walls. Another widely used technique is that of horizontal cutting of the masonry and the consequent insertion of a mechanical barrier that prevents humidity from rising.

There are also numerous other techniques which, however, are not always easy to apply, so it would be far better to prevent the formation of mold.

However, if this has already formed and you do not want to use the methods mentioned above, you can resort to decidedly less invasive methods, such as the application of a dehumidifying plaster . In this case, however, the old plaster must be removed before applying the new one. 

Of course, the wall can also be insulated with heat insulation.
