Creating modern floors with ancient techniques

Lime flooring is an ancient technique for creating monolithic cocciopesto floors. The aesthetic results are surprising and very fascinating.

A contemporary solution

The lime or beaten lime floor has been rediscovered, on an aesthetic level, in recent times as it is very trendy in the world of interior design.

Modern architecture prefers large surfaces and for this reason, designers tend to prefer large monolithic floors.

Cocciopesto is a valid alternative to resin floors.

Since no harmful but completely natural materials are used, air pollution is reduced and hygrothermal comfort inside a home is increased.

It is a material that is very resistant to humidity and is suitable for bathroom and kitchen floors or for houses on the ground floor which often have problems with capillary rise.

On an aesthetic level, floors made of lime wrought have an elegant, sober and minimalist appearance. Always in a solid colour, they enhance the natural color of the material and show delicate earthy nuances.

The main characteristics of the lime floor

Compared to the techniques of the past, there are few variations that the lime flooring has undergone over time. The raw materials have not changed, lime putty, sand, pebbles and cocciopesto (fragments of ground tiles, bricks or terracotta).

If the flooring is made in a wooden attic, the first phase is to fill the gaps between the planks so as not to let the material fall to the floor below, in other cases the surface is made perfectly horizontal.

Once the plan has been created, a thorough cleaning is carried out and all traces of dust and dirt are removed.

The first layer of substrate is then laid with a thickness between 10 and 20 centimetres.

After smoothing and beating the first layer, the covering or bottom covering is created with a thickness between 2 and 4 centimeters.

It is left to rest for a few days and when the material has hardened almost completely, the surface is washed and the finish is applied according to the type of floor.
