The functional layers of the plaster
Plaster is a mortar-based compound used for
covering masonry walls in the rough state made of perforated bricks or
solid, brick or stone.
Its application serves to protect walls and
prepare a smooth and clean base to ensure that on the internal walls and
exteriors can be painted and finished.
The plaster layers were already defined at that time
Roman: rinzaffo, arriccio and intonachino/establishing (we will analyze them at the end
of the article).
And even today, plaster is the most used covering
thanks above all to its cheapness and ease of application.
Lime plaster
Lime-based plaster, unlike that
cementitious (with extremely low hygroscopicity), it is an excellent material
able to avoid the formation of bacteria (mold) and condensation. A simple formulation,
to be prepared on site, avoiding cement and synthetic additives. The
Lime plasters also guarantee excellent mechanical resistance and great
workability, respecting tradition and bio-architecture.
The functional layers
of the plaster
Let’s see which ones now
are the functional layers of the plaster:
- Rinzaffo: carries out
the function of support, leveling and regulation of water absorbency of the
surfaces, ensuring the adhesion of the second layer. - Arriccio: the
second layer has the task of coplanar lining, water tightness and
mechanical resistance. Less hydraulic binder and water is applied than
to the first layer to give greater compactness and avoid problems of
cracking. - Plaster/establishment:
the last layer is used to create the final finishes, which will have to
be smooth and homogeneous. The layer consists of a mortar obtained with
fine grain sand.
