Natural antibacterials in construction: lime water

lime water

A wall affected by mold is not only an ugly wall and therefore presents the characteristic stains, but above all it is a wall where various bacteria can nest . Eliminating mold is therefore essential for the healthiness of environments. The calcium hydrate solution, or lime water, is a natural antibacterial that has always been used in construction and which also allows you to obtain pigmented glazes with natural earths.

Lime water, what is it

Lime water is a solution of hydrated lime suspended in saturated water . It is obtained by maceration of pure lime putty with a high calcium hydrate content. The basic binder is an excellent quality slaked lime which is in turn obtained from the low temperature calcination of pure limestone.

Lime water is, as mentioned, a natural antibacterial , very breathable, which offers significant resistance to the formation of mold and bacteria, despite being totally free of chemical additives, which is why it is widely exploited in the green building sector.

How lime water is used

One of the main uses, as we have seen, is as an antibacterial. It is enough to treat a wall, where perhaps there was a stain of mould, to restore its healthiness, but not only that. This product is also used for the preparation of colored glazes or for the cortical consolidation of so-called crumbling artefacts, which therefore tend to deteriorate rapidly.

Clearly, the consolidation action by inhibition must be carried out in several coats depending on the type and porosity of the support in order to obtain an optimal effect.

It is therefore a widely used product which finds wide acceptance especially in all those buildings that reflect the principles of modern green building. It can also be made at home, obviously if you have the right space, but certainly the one found on the market is decidedly more practical and allows you to save considerably in terms of time.
