Renovation of historic buildings

As the years pass, historic buildings suffer from their safety and structural rigidity. Although the materials from which they were made, even several centuries ago, have resisted until now.

One of the dangers that occur most often are seismic movements due to earthquakes even with large magnitudes that are not too high. Several examples could be given and one of the most striking is the earthquake that occurred in 2009 and which caused the distinction of several historic buildings, including Santa Maria Del Soccorso, Teatro San Filippo, Palazzo Ardinghelli and others. These structures will be returned after 10 years, therefore in the current year.

Restoration methods

The restoration of these works and buildings can take place in different ways. First of all, an on-site study is carried out which is useful for accurately understanding the current situation and only then do we think about the types of applications.
The interventions differ in their extension, static behavior  ascertained and achieved, invasiveness and reversibility, state of compulsion provided, architectural integrity and durability and compatibility of the material.

Extension means if limited or extensive works are carried out on the entire building, then the interventions can modify the static behavior of the structure.

Practical application

Like the application characteristics, the intervention methods also differ from each other. And they can belong to some categories or even match each other.
Strength member reinforcement is a technique used to increase the strength, rigidity and ductility of the structure. Other methods are the reduction of masses, limitation or change of the intended use of the building and introduction of passive protection through dissipative bracing structures and/or insulation at the base.
Even in these cases, some of our operators work alongside restorers of buildings and architectural structures, in order to make the final result of the restoration even more quality and long-lasting over time.
