How to do it and application
Tadelakt is a particular mineral-inspired coating
to the Moroccan tradition composed of pure lime, specific pozzolans
natural and siliceous calcareous sands.
We are therefore talking about a type of eco plaster
sustainable and bio compatible very similar to the original product, which
it comes pre-packaged in powder without the addition of cement and plaster.
Furthermore, the specific composition of the product gives the dough
remarkable adhesion to the support, excellent elasticity, high breathability
and a high resistance to the formation of mold and bacteria.
And again, it does not contain substances harmful to health and
the environment, can be recycled as inert at the end of its life cycle,
and is suitable for decorative and protective finishing work on surfaces
internal (according to the traditional Moroccan method).
Having said that, before I explain how the application takes place
Let’s see how Tadelakt is made and what the various processing steps are.
Tadelakt: how to do it
The making of traditional Tadelakt takes place
through the processing of a special lime, produced in old kilns
Marrakech wood-fired by hand and obtained from the calcination of limestone
impure, which is cooked inside intermittent ovens powered by
olive and palm wood for about 30 hours.
The mixture is then applied as a plaster for
then be smoothed by the use of river stones and polished with a soap
black in colour, which is made with olives.
The result will be a surface with a wavy appearance,
waterproof, shiny and with a color that is not entirely homogeneous.
The composition of Tadelakt Calchèra San Giorgio is very
similar to the original product. Made from pure air lime, specifications
natural pozzolana and calcareous-siliceous sand.
Tadelakt:
application
Now that you understand what Tadelakt is and how to make it, let’s see
specifically how this particular plaster is applied.
First, on the adequately wet bottom, spread a
first coat of Tadelakt using an American trowel or a square trowel,
leaving the surface in a partially rough state.
Afterwards, apply the second layer when the first is not
still completely dry, and smooth it with the edge of the American spatula or
a special plastic spatula, to obtain a smooth surface and
compact.
Once the smoothing phase is finished, proceed with the
smoothing the surface using cut or artificial stones for
be able to perform adequate scrubbing and, when the product is not yet
dried completely, apply a first soaping with traditional soap
diluted vegetable black (or even Marseille soap).
The next day, proceed with a second soaping, using
the same soap, allowing it to penetrate until saturated, and then smooth
the surface with the stone using circular movements.
And after about 10/15 days you can proceed with the waxing.
Remember: do not use edge protectors for corners but
round the edges.
Not following some principles of the Rule of Art can
lead to less than satisfactory results.
